Volunteer Support Worker (Indigenous Children, Youth & Families)
Position Summary
Niitoiyis is seeking dedicated and compassionate volunteers to support our culturally grounded programs and services for Indigenous children, youth, and families. Volunteers play an important role in strengthening community supports by assisting staff in delivering safe, respectful, and trauma-informed programming.
Niitoiyis provides advocacy, safety planning, referrals to counselling, and resource-based support to individuals and families. Our programs are designed using a holistic approach that supports mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Services incorporate traditional Indigenous teachings and ceremonies alongside contemporary approaches to wellness and personal development.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Supporting staff during group and community programming
- Assisting with youth and family activities in a safe and respectful manner
- Helping maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally safe environment
- Supporting event preparation, set-up, and clean-up
- Assisting with administrative tasks as needed
- Maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries at all times
Qualifications & Skills
- A respectful and non-judgmental approach when working with children, youth, and families
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliability, accountability, and the ability to work as part of a team
- A willingness to learn and engage with Indigenous culture, traditions, and holistic wellness practices
- Commitment to confidentiality and ethical conduct
Assets
- Certification in First Aid/CPR
- Training or certification in Trauma-Informed Practice
Additional Requirements
- Police Information Check (PIC) required
- Child Intervention Record Check required
- Ability to work in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive environment
- Availability to commit to scheduled volunteer shifts
Time Commitment
Flexible scheduling based on program needs and volunteer availability. Consistent commitment is preferred.
